Gruss Gott, Guten Tag, Servus, Hallo, Wilkommen

Hello and Welcome to the home page of the Youngstown Saxon Culture Group. We are a group dedicated to the continuation and promotion of our Transylvanian Saxon cultural heritage.

When one hears the word Saxon, the typical connection is to Anglo-Saxon. The Anglo-Saxons are from areas of France and England. The Transylvanian Saxons come from the Transylvania segment of Romania. Transylvania is located near and among the Carpathian mountains. Transylvanian Saxons are mainly comprised of Germanic immigrants who traveled and settled into this portion of Romania in search of good farming land and trading opportunities. One can also find lineage to other countries of the area, including Hungary. The area in which they settled is named Siebenburgen (seven castles). As the name suggests, the seven castles represent the seven foremost cities of this region. The castles of European cities demonstrated the wealth, military and political power of the city in which it was built. The Siebenburger Saxons lived and prospered in this region for several hundred years. During this time developing their own culture, traditions and language. This era was unfortunately brought to an end in the closing days of WWII with the Russian occupation of Romania. Most Saxons were forced to abandon their homeland and relocate to other countries, such as; Germany, Austria, Canada, and of course, the United States.

Our group was founded in 1969, by such a group of immigrants, and is based at the Saxon Club in Youngstown, Ohio. We are comprised of two performing factions, the Tanzgruppe (dance group) and the Blasskapelle (brass band).

Throughout our 30 plus years of existence we have continued the traditions of our forefathers (and mothers) with our performances in music and dance.

We have been very fortunate to have not only performed locally for Octoberfests, Schlachtfests, Heimattags, etc., but also in different states and countries. Most recently we have again traveled through parts of Europe, in the summer of 2006, for the third time in eight years. During our tours we have performed for Transylvanian Saxons in Germany and Austria. We have made life-long friends with the peoples we have visited and some of us have met family we had never before seen.
